Cynics may argue that politics is more entertainment than substance. But the wisest and shrewdest of politicians for decades in the use of music in order to win votes and gain popularity.
None of it worked better than James Houston Davis, better known as Jimmie Davis, co-written the well known and described what has become an American classic, "You Are My Sunshine". Jimmie Davis recorded "You Are My Sunshine" was in 1940 and it became an instant success, although an earlier version in 1931, he failed toBegin. Later, Davis was terminated as the "singing governor" known and often performed music during his campaign. He served two terms as governor of Louisiana (1944-1948 and 1960-1964).
The Davis musical formula is not lost on subsequent political aspirants. Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 to April 22, 1994), who was badly beaten in the presidential election of 1960 (from John F. Kennedy) and again in 1962 in his attempt for governor of California, found a rebirth throughMusic.
Only six months after his humiliating defeat in California was published, Nixon on "The Jack Paar Show, playing a song on the piano, which he himself had written. Miraculously, this was the beginning of one of the most remarkable comebacks in American political history . And of course, Nixon was the 37th President of the United States to win the big money in 1968.
Made recently, William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton, a legendary performance on MTV in its original bid for the White House in1992nd Clinton appeared at a "town hall-style" special, in which he played the saxophone (and answered questions about his underwear!). Later credited the MTV appearance with support to encourage young people about politics and went to the Republican incumbent President George W. Bush in the general elections to topple always the 42nd President of the United States and two-year terms.
The election year 2008 saw the music as a vote-getter once again. On Wednesday 2 January, the formerArkansas Governor (1996 to 2007), Mike Huckabee appeared on NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno, playing bass in a blues song with band leader Kevin Eubanks and the Tonight Show Band. The very next day, 2008 Presidential candidate Huckabee WON the Iowa caucus of the Republicans, an unlikely just weeks ago.
